About:
The Waterloo volleyball teams had the honor of joining Newark’s volleyball program for a special Dig Pink event dedicated to raising awareness and funds for breast cancer research. The event brought together three Waterloo teams and three Newark teams for a day filled with games, community spirit, and a shared commitment to a meaningful cause.
Waterloo players proudly wore pink jerseys in solidarity, joining Newark in creating an atmosphere of unity and purpose. Newark’s team organized T-shirt sales, raffles, and concessions, with all proceeds benefiting the Dig Pink Organization. During the event, participants paused to honor individuals in the gym who have been touched by cancer, making the day even more poignant.
A Local Touch: Serve-a-Thon for Community Support
While the teams embraced the larger cause of Dig Pink, Waterloo also sought to make a difference closer to home. Traditionally, Waterloo hosts a “Volley for a Cure” tournament, but this year, they shifted gears. To support local community members battling cancer, they organized a Serve-a-Thon, combining volleyball with a fundraising initiative.
In the weeks leading up to the event, the Varsity team launched a social media campaign to raise awareness and went door-to-door visiting local businesses. Their efforts not only raised funds but also strengthened community ties. Generous donations, both monetary and in the form of prizes, poured in to support the cause.
The Serve-a-Thon turned out to be a huge success, raising $2,000, which was donated to two local community members currently fighting cancer. The event featured shirts for all three teams—Modified, JV, and Varsity—and included a variety of serving games where players competed to win the donated prizes. Dinner was provided, adding a warm and communal feel to the evening.
A Season to Remember
The Serve-a-Thon was a memorable way to wrap up the season, blending fun with a heartfelt mission. Waterloo’s players demonstrated the power of teamwork, not just on the court but in their community. Through their participation in the Dig Pink event and their efforts with the Serve-a-Thon, the Waterloo volleyball teams showcased the profound impact athletes can make when they come together for a greater cause.
Their dedication to breast cancer awareness and local support truly embodies the spirit of giving back. It’s a season the players, coaches, and community will not soon forget.
