the players thought they would wear shorts and a button down shirt to our away game
As a coach at the highschool level we all like to win, but more importantly we like to help our players win in life. It is our job as coaches to use the tool of our sport to help educate and mold young minds to be productive members of society. Coaching Football to me has always been a passion because of how much it mimics some of life’s challenges. When our young men face adversity in a football game or practice we try to help them work through the process, part of working through this process is to relate it to real life settings. I always will take an adverse or challenging situation in life and try to make it a teachable moment. We always stress to our players about giving back and helping others, it is our “family” way. When the sad news of Matt Trabold came out, we talked to our players about how we would like to give back and our Junior Quarterback Mason Blankenberg said: ” Coach how about all the players wear shorts and a button down dress shirt to the game, in honor of him.?” I couldn’t have been more proud of our players and how they went about dealing with and honoring Matt and this tragic situation. To me that is what high school sports are all about, teaching, learning and giving back.
