We the Students: South Street School celebrates Constitution Day

South Street School students marked Constitution Day on Sept. 17 with activities designed to help them explore the meaning and importance of the United States Constitution.

Second graders read “We the Kids” by David Catrow and participated in discussions about the Constitution, including why it was created and why it remains an important part of the country’s history and government.

Several classes took their learning a step further by connecting the principles of the Constitution to their own classroom communities. Students created their own classroom constitutions and mission statements; identifying shared values and expectations that would help make their classrooms welcoming, respectful and supportive places to learn.

Through these age-appropriate activities, South Street School students celebrated Constitution Day while building an early understanding of citizenship, shared responsibility and the principles that help communities thrive.
