About:
Garden City, N.Y.- Men’s Basketball’s Ronnie Silva and Softball’s Courtney Wengryn were presented the male and female Panther Leadership Awards at this year’s athletics department end of year awards ceremony, held Monday, May 1.
The Panther Leadership Award is presented to athletes of any academic level who epitomize what it means to be a Panther. From their pride wearing the Brown and Gold, to leading their programs both on and off the field, the athletic department recognizes their help to the community through service and helpful nature.
Wengryn not only served on the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) executive board, but also drove the athletic department to partner up with Morgan’s Message to help raise awareness on the mental well-being of student-athletes.
“My goal for starting Morgan’s Message here at Adelphi was to ultimately equalize the treatment of physical and mental health. Being an athlete myself, I know the kind of struggles we go through and how overlooked it is,” said Wengryn upon accepting the award.
On the field, the redshirt sophomore hit .393 with a 1.018 OPS. The left-fielder additionally hit five round-trippers which helped her get to 40 RBI. Her efforts helped the Panthers win the Northeast-10 Championship and host a Super-Regional aided by their 25-game win streak.
“I really wanted to emphasize that you are so much more than how you perform, and your stats do not define you. Always remember, you are a person before you are a student or an athlete,” she continued.
