About:
Throughout December, a great emphasis was placed on making sure that the holidays were merry for all families. Second grade students in Shaina Fischer’s class at West Gates Avenue Elementary School in the Lindenhurst Union Free School District recently read “The Mitten Tree,” by Candace Christiansen. The class brainstormed ways in which they could serve their community while making a personal connection to the literature. With the support of school social worker Lisa Botticelli, the students established a Mitten Tree drive within the school. The Tree was decorated with mittens, gloves, hats and scarves, which were then donated to those in the community in need of warm winter wear.
