About:
The West Hollow community proudly welcomed the ALS Ride for Life this week as part of the organization’s inspirational journey across Long Island to raise awareness and funds for those affected by ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis).
The arrival of the Ride was met with high energy and heartfelt support. Cheerleaders led a spirited welcome as riders arrived, while 6th and 7th grade students lined the route holding homemade posters, each one a colorful and creative tribute to the cause.
Christine Pendergast, wife of Ride for Life founder Christopher Pendergast, shared the powerful story behind the event. Her late husband, a dedicated educator and ALS warrior, created the Ride to give a voice to ALS patients and to inspire action and empathy. A pALS (person living with ALS) speaker delivered a moving message to students, reminding them that strength comes in many forms—including the courage to ask for help.
The school community embraced the cause beyond the event itself. A special Jersey Day was held in honor of Lou Gehrig, raising awareness about ALS and celebrating the legendary athlete whose name has long been associated with the disease. In addition, a schoolwide fundraiser further demonstrated West Hollow’s commitment to supporting ALS research and patient care.
The day was a powerful reminder of the strength found in unity and compassion, and West Hollow was proud to be a stop on this meaningful journey.
