About:
The White Bear Lake Boys Varsity Soccer program, led by Head Coach Taelynn Gittins, recently hosted a powerful event dedicated to raising awareness around mental health—particularly within athletics.
The evening brought together several community organizations, including Sophie’s Squad, Thumbs Up, NAMI, Prairie Care, The Hidden Opponent, and the Jordyn Clark Foundation, all united in support of the cause. Players from both White Bear Lake and Park High School wore “Mental Health Matters” shirts to send a strong and visible message: it’s okay to feel emotions, it’s okay to not be okay, and it’s okay to ask for help.
Before the game, the program held a moment of silence and unveiled an honor wall to remember those who have lost their battle with mental health. In addition, athletes helped sell shirts to fans, family, and community members, with all proceeds benefiting the Jordyn Clark Foundation.
The initiative was born from a desire to break down the stigma surrounding mental health in sports, especially on the boys’ side, where athletes often feel pressure to remain silent about their struggles. By creating space for conversation and providing resources, the program sought to remind players that vulnerability is a strength, not a weakness.
All athletes, from JV to Varsity, wore “Mental Health Matters” shirts throughout the day and during warm-ups. The team also took time to hold an important discussion on mental health and asking for help before the match.
The event drew significant community support and even media coverage, with WCCO sharing the story: Watch here.
By combining the power of athletics with community partnerships, White Bear Lake Boys Soccer demonstrated that teamwork extends beyond the field—toward building a culture of support, compassion, and awareness.
