About:
“We would like to welcome everyone to Memorial field for this afternoon’s game between the visiting Northport Tigers and the Walt Whitman Wildcats. Did you know April is the month of Hope? The PE and athletic department is working to bring the South Huntington Community together to celebrate the power of hope and honor those impacted by cancer. We would like to thank the Northport softball team for participating in our Strikeout Cancer game, where we are raising money for Maggie’s Mission. Maggie’s mission is a local nonprofit organization who uses donations they receive to help fund childhood cancer research, and help families coping with a sick child.
Whitman is wearing one blue sock and one pink sock in honor of two physical education teachers who passed away from battles with cancer. The blue sock is for Mr. Vinny Altebrando, who passed away in 2018 from a rare cancer known as HLH, and the pink sock is for Mrs. Barbarajean Douglas, who passed away this December from breast cancer. In addition to teaching, both coached various sports during their tenure in South Huntington, and were survived by their families. We are joined today by members of Mrs.Douglas’ family, and now invite them to throw out the first pitch.”
