About:
For Cheryl Brown, a first-grade teacher at Islip’s Wing Elementary School, the fact that her friend’s son is currently serving in Afghanistan provided a spark of inspiration. Her idea to send packages and letters to soldiers who don’t normally receive care packages took off, and students in her own classroom as well as other classes at Wing recently participated in writing letters to the troops, appreciating their heroism and providing warm holiday wishes.
“The children absolutely loved it,” said Brown. “They learned about where Afghanistan is, and we talked about some of the freedoms that we have because of all of the soldiers who have fought in the past and those who are currently fighting for us.”
