About:
The Woodbury Girls Hockey program used the platform of sport to promote an important message about student-athlete wellness by hosting a Mental Health Awareness Game in partnership with Sophie’s Squad.
Held on December 2 at Cottage Grove Ice Arena during their matchup against Park, the event focused on raising awareness about the mental health challenges athletes can face and encouraging open conversations about seeking support. JV and varsity contests brought together players, families, and community members in a shared effort to highlight the importance of emotional well-being both on and off the ice.
Sophie’s Squad, a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the mental health of athletes through education and advocacy, played a central role in the evening. The organization emphasizes that asking for help is a sign of strength and works to break down stigma surrounding mental health in sports environments. Through this partnership, Woodbury athletes helped amplify a powerful message that resonates with students across all levels of competition.
Events like this demonstrate how athletic programs can lead meaningful initiatives that extend far beyond the scoreboard. By dedicating a game to mental health awareness, the Woodbury Girls Hockey team created an opportunity to foster understanding, compassion, and connection within their school and the broader community.
Their leadership in supporting mental health advocacy reflects the growing role student-athletes are taking in promoting wellness initiatives and creating positive team cultures. Through efforts like this, Woodbury Girls Hockey continues to show how sports can be a catalyst for important conversations and lasting impact.
