About:
The Wakefield High School community came together for an inspiring evening as WMHS Morgan’s Message hosted its first dedication game of the year, raising awareness for mental health in athletics.
Student-athletes, coaches, and fans united to honor the mission of Morgan’s Message, a nonprofit organization dedicated to breaking the stigma surrounding mental health and empowering athletes to prioritize their emotional well-being.
The event served as a powerful reminder that mental health matters just as much as physical health — and that no one should struggle alone. Through events like this, Wakefield students continue to lead with empathy, strength, and purpose, showing how sports can serve as a platform for meaningful change.
The Wakefield Morgan’s Message Club is dedicated to honoring the life and legacy of Morgan Rodgers, a former Duke University student-athlete who tragically passed away in July 2019 after battling mental health struggles. Though her life was cut short, her story continues to inspire vital conversations about mental health and the importance of supporting one another both on and off the field.
The club currently has 50 members, both girls and boys, and meets monthly to explore important topics such as suicide prevention, understanding mental health, and eliminating stigma. Each meeting includes hands-on activities — from identifying personal core values to open group discussions — to foster connection, understanding, and leadership.
Leading the effort is the club’s Head Ambassador, who not only oversees and plans each meeting but also trains new ambassadors and organizes dedication games. These events require more than 10 hours of preparation, from designing posters and hair ribbons to decorating and setting up the venue. The ambassador also dedicates an additional 5–6 hours each month to planning club activities, providing snacks, and guiding discussions that strengthen the sense of community among members.
Together, the Wakefield community continues to unite for something bigger than themselves — to honor Morgan’s legacy, break the stigma surrounding mental health, and remind one another that it’s okay to not be okay
