About:
What unfolded at Yorktown High School on Friday, February 7 was far more than a rivalry game—it was a powerful reminder of how sports can unite entire communities around compassion, gratitude, and shared purpose.
As the Yorktown Huskers Boys Basketball and Somers Tuskers Boys Basketball took the floor, the energy in the gym reflected something deeper than competition. Coaches, student-athletes, families, and fans from both towns packed the stands—standing room only—to honor strength, courage, and resilience. It was a night that proved even the most spirited rivalries can give way to unity when it matters most.
At the heart of the evening was Mr. Joseph DeGennaro, a longtime leader and deeply respected member of the Yorktown community. Joined by his family, he welcomed Somers with warmth and generosity, setting the tone for a night defined by mutual respect and support. The opportunity to honor Charlie DeGennaro, whose journey has touched so many, added an especially meaningful layer to the event. The packed gym wasn’t just a show of school spirit—it was a reflection of how powerfully his story resonates across communities.
On the court, the game lived up to the moment—well-coached, hard-fought, and played with heart by talented athletes on both sides. Yorktown ultimately earned the win, but the true victory of the night was found in the stands and in the shared purpose that brought two towns together.
This marked the 5th Annual fundraising game benefiting Blythedale Children’s Hospital, with all proceeds donated directly to the hospital. Prior to this year’s event, the initiative had already raised an incredible $40,000. As of the latest update, $7,266 has been raised from this year’s game—and donations are still coming in.
Events like this remind us why education-based athletics matter. They provide a platform not only for competition, but for empathy, leadership, and connection—showing student-athletes and fans alike that sports can bring people together in the most meaningful ways.
