About:
Students at Timber Point Elementary School in the East Islip Union Free School District recently came together to tackle hunger through the school’s first-ever “Souper Bowl” food drive.
Led by teachers Alyssa Lofaro and Jamie Sconone, the two-week initiative encouraged students to bring in canned food donations that would support families in need across Long Island. The response from the school community was tremendous, with students collecting an impressive 1,419 cans of food for Long Island Cares.
The event added a fun and friendly competitive element, as classrooms worked together to collect the most donations. Kindergarten students led the way, collecting an outstanding 543 cans and earning the title of the school’s Souper Bowl champions.
“It was wonderful to see how excited the students were to bring in their cans and how they engaged in a friendly competition with one another,” said teacher Alyssa Lofaro. “The generosity shown by students, families, and the Timber Point community has been truly incredible, and every donation will make a meaningful impact for neighbors in need across Long Island.”
Teacher Jamie Sconone shared similar sentiments, noting that the inaugural event was a tremendous success and that the school hopes to continue the Souper Bowl tradition for years to come.
By turning a simple food drive into a schoolwide event filled with teamwork and generosity, students at Timber Point Elementary School demonstrated how even the youngest learners can make a meaningful difference in their community
