The Hill-Murray Football team is once again coming together for a cause that reaches far beyond the football field.
This season, the team is raising funds for the Randy Shaver Tackle Cancer Research and Community Fund, continuing a tradition of using athletics to support families and individuals impacted by cancer.
Each player on the Hill-Murray roster has been challenged to raise $700, with teammates reaching out to family, friends, and supporters in hopes of filling their fundraising T-shirts with names representing people who have battled cancer.
For Hill-Murray player Evan Curtis, the fundraiser is especially meaningful. Last year, his supporters helped him raise more than $1,200, and this year he hopes to surpass that total.
But for Evan, the effort is about much more than reaching a fundraising goal.
He wears #22 in football and soccer in honor of his Grandpop, who passed away from a rare and aggressive form of cancer. His family has also been impacted by breast cancer, with a cousin currently battling stage 4 breast cancer after previously beating the disease into remission nearly a decade ago.
The cause also hits close to home within the Hill-Murray football family. Evan’s teammate Jack is a childhood cancer survivor, having overcome a rare form of the disease. This year’s fundraising effort is being organized by Jack’s mother, making the initiative even more personal for the team.
Like so many communities, the Hill-Murray players know countless family members and friends whose lives have been touched by cancer. Their response is to come together, raise awareness, support research, and help fight back.
The team’s fundraising campaign runs for just one week, giving players time to complete their fundraising efforts before one of the most meaningful games of their season.
On October 14, Hill-Murray will host its Tackle Cancer Game, which will also serve as Senior Night, making the evening especially significant for the players, families, and community.
