Shoreham-Wading River honors Patriot Day

The Shoreham-Wading River School District honored the lives lost and the heroes who responded on Sept. 11, 2001, with meaningful tributes and moments of reflection across its schools.

Throughout the district, students and staff observed a moment of silence in remembrance of those who lost their lives on Sept. 11 and in honor of the courage and sacrifice demonstrated by first responders. Schools throughout the district also encouraged students and staff to wear red, white and blue as an expression of remembrance and patriotism.

At Shoreham-Wading River High School, a message was shared with staff and students before the moment of silence, providing an opportunity for the school community to reflect on the significance of the day.

At Wading River School, students participated in the Pledge of Allegiance in the hallway, coming together as a school community. Wading River School also invited students, families and staff to participate in a stair-climbing tribute, honoring the first responders who climbed the towers’ stairs on 9/11. Participants could climb one flight of stairs or take on the full challenge of approximately 2,200 steps – the equivalent of climbing all 110 floors of the Twin Towers.

Students at Miller Avenue School participated in a hands-on tribute by planting American flags along the school’s walkway. The display served as a powerful reminder of the lives and stories behind the day while creating a visual tribute for the school community.

Through these thoughtful acts of remembrance, the Shoreham-Wading River community honored those who lost their lives and those who showed extraordinary courage on Sept. 11, 2001.
