First graders and their fifth grade buddies shared a common purpose during their recent get-together at East Lake Elementary School in the Massapequa School District. They wanted to thank the men and women who sacrificed in service of the United States.
In advance of Veterans Day, students from the two grades gathered in the cafeteria on Nov. 2 to make cards for veterans. With red and blue construction paper, letter templates and images of American flags and hearts, students had the tools they needed to make creative and meaningful cards. Fifth graders guided the younger peers in writing poignant messages while also helping them with spelling, grammar and punctuation.
Fifth grade student leaders began by sharing a little information about Veterans Day and the purpose of their project. Together with the first graders, they created more than 100 cards to distribute to veterans hospitals throughout Long Island.
