About:
Nearly 700 cans of soup and other nonperishable items were donated by students throughout the North Bellmore School District for the annual Souper Bowl food drive.
The collection was organized by the student councils at each of the five elementary schools. Students could place donations in boxes representing the teams they thought would win this year’s Souper Bowl.
All of the donations were given to the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District’s Community Cupboard. On Feb. 11, members of the Saw Mill Road Elementary School student council delivered all of the items. They spent about an hour unpacking boxes, checking expiration dates and stocking shelves.
Assistant Principal Daniel Madden, who advises the student council along with teachers Danielle Houghton and Melissa Mignoli, commended fourth, fifth and sixth grade student leaders for their hard work. He said that not many students get to see the true impact of their donations. Community Cupboard co-director Karin McMahon gave students a brief tour of the facility located at the Brookside School and explained the work that they do to help residents of the community.
