About:
What began as a heartfelt tribute has blossomed into a significant annual event at Agawam High School. The Coaches vs. Cancer lacrosse game, now in its third year, has evolved from raising a few hundred dollars to nearly $4,300 in 2024, all in support of pancreatic cancer awareness.
The initiative was inspired by the Agawam defense coach, who lost his mother to pancreatic cancer. Since then, the team has rallied around the cause, channeling their efforts into making a meaningful impact. While the focus remains on pancreatic cancer, the game serves as a broader reminder that cancer has touched the lives of many—players, families, and fans alike.
This year’s game is scheduled for April 29 at 5:30 p.m., where Agawam will face off against their rival, West Springfield. The players will wear purple socks to honor pancreatic cancer awareness, and purple ribbons and awareness items will be distributed at the game to unite the community behind this important cause.
In addition to the game, charitable donations and giveaways will be part of the evening, making it a memorable night for a great cause. With strong community support, the event continues to demonstrate the power of combining sports with purpose.
The Agawam lacrosse team, comprising approximately 30 players from both Varsity and Junior Varsity, plays an active role in organizing the event. They assist in gathering items for raffles, securing monetary donations, and promoting the event through social media. On the day of the game, while preparing to play, they also contribute to setting up and breaking down the event, embodying the spirit of teamwork and community service.
This annual tradition not only raises funds for cancer research but also fosters a sense of unity and compassion within the Agawam community. It stands as a testament to the impact that student-athletes can have when they come together for a common cause.
