About:
Students at Arrowhead Elementary School transformed learning into action this spring, raising $1,000 in support of ALS research and education while gaining a deeper understanding of the importance of empathy, advocacy, and community involvement.
The initiative began in April when students in grades 3–5 attended a powerful educational assembly featuring a Person with ALS (PALS), who shared firsthand experiences living with the disease. The presentation provided students with a meaningful opportunity to learn about Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), its impact on individuals and families, and the importance of ongoing research and support efforts.
Moved by what they learned, students were inspired to take action.
Over the course of two week-long fundraising campaigns held in April and May, the Arrowhead school community came together to support the cause. Through their collective efforts, students, families, and staff raised an impressive $1,000 to help advance ALS research, education, and awareness.
The initiative culminated in a special ALS Walk that brought the school community together in a visible demonstration of support for those affected by the disease. As students walked alongside their classmates and teachers, they celebrated the impact they had made while reinforcing the message that even young people can play an important role in creating positive change.
The project was coordinated by School Social Worker Jenna O’Leary and Special Education Teacher Seth Hanneken, whose leadership helped turn a learning opportunity into a meaningful service experience. By combining education, fundraising, and advocacy, they provided students with a powerful lesson in compassion and civic engagement.
Beyond the funds raised, the initiative helped students develop a greater understanding of the challenges faced by individuals living with ALS and demonstrated how awareness can inspire action. Through their efforts, Arrowhead students learned that making a difference begins with understanding, empathy, and a willingness to help others.
The success of the fundraiser and ALS Walk reflects the caring spirit of the Arrowhead Elementary community and serves as an inspiring example of how students can come together to support important causes.
