About:

Hempstead, NY – With midterm examinations coming to an end, student-athletes from Hofstra University have been very active in the community, giving back to individuals, groups and organizations. During the week last week in October, student-athletes combined for more than 200 hours of service. Some of the highlighted projects included:

Long Island Children’s Museum Gala
On Saturday, October 25, student-athletes from women’s basketball and men’s and women’s tennis dressed in their Hofstra uniforms and volunteered at the Annual Long Island Children’s Museum Gala. On the night of the event, each room of the Museum is used for a different activity, all with a Halloween theme. Student-athletes helped out in a number of ways, including registration, manning snack stations, assisting children with arts and crafts and teaching children about the history of the Museum as well as Halloween.

McVey Elementary 5K
On Sunday, October 26, team members from the baseball and wrestling teams spent the morning assisting at the McVey Elementary School 5K Fundraiser in East Meadow, New York. Student-athletes arrived early to help set-up for the event, as well as ran water stations and encouraged participants throughout the race.

CAA Blood Drive Challenge
On Tuesday, October 28, student-athletes, coaches and athletic department administrators took part in the 13th Annual CAA Blood Drive Challenge. This year’s event, run in partnership with the New York Blood Center and Hofstra University, collected 320 units, which will go towards saving more than 950 lives. Student-athletes volunteered to donate blood, as well as in a variety of other areas including registration, canteen and hosting a promotion table for two days prior to the event.

North Side Elementary Biography Day
On Wednesday, October 29, 24 student-athletes representing eight athletic teams at Hofstra took a visit to North Side Elementary School in Levittown, New York, to be interviewed by a class of fourth graders. Student from North Side met one-on-one with student-athletes from baseball, men’s and women’s soccer, field hockey, wrestling, men’s tennis, women’s golf and women’s cross country. Students from North Side will be writing biographies on the Hofstra student-athletes and illustrated books will be published in the spring 2015.

Visit To The Viscardi Center
On Monday, October 27, the Hofstra Women’s Basketball team took a special trip to The Viscardi Center in Albertson, New York. The Viscardi Center is a non-profit organization that provides education and services for adults and children with disabilities. Team members were given a tour of the facility, and also played in a wheelchair basketball game with several of the students.
