About:
Three years ago, the RCSD community received sobering news: Joe LaPietra, one of its Athletic Directors, was diagnosed with ALS, setting forth a challenging journey for Joe and his family. In response, colleagues rallied together to establish the inaugural Strike Out ALS Day. Led by Donna Enright, Athletic Director at School 58, the event showcased five baseball games, each serving as a platform for fundraising efforts benefiting Joe and other families affected by ALS across western and central NY.
During the event, the East baseball team adorned custom jerseys bearing LaPietra’s name, exclusively tailored for the occasion. In a heartfelt gesture, the team presented Joe with a card and his own #20 jersey, paying homage to his favorite number, before taking to the field. Despite the adversities, the day emanated hope, offering Joe and his family a moment of respite amidst their trials.

In essence, the victory of the East High baseball team over Bishop Kearney/Chesterton transcended beyond the game itself; it was a poignant tribute to a cherished figure in their community, Joe LaPietra, who battles ALS. Through custom uniforms adorned with LaPietra’s name and a symbolic “Strike Out ALS” ribbon, the team not only honored him but also raised awareness for the cause. This game was a cornerstone of the inaugural Strike Out Lou Gehrig’s Disease Baseball Classic, uniting ten teams in support of ALS awareness. While Miguel Matos shone brightly for East’s offense, Augustine Valentini made his mark for Bishop Kearney/Chesterton. The event concluded with plans for ALS Awareness Day on June 2nd, underscoring ongoing efforts to support the ALS Association.
