On Sept. 9, Rocky Point High School came together to remember and honor the lives lost on Sept. 11, 2001, with a moving assembly that reflected on the events of that day and the unity that followed in its aftermath.
The day began with the sound of a bagpiper, setting the tone as students and staff gathered to commemorate 25 years since 9/11. Members of the Rocky Point VFW were also on hand, proudly displaying American flags as a symbol of remembrance and patriotism.
The assembly continued with patriotic performances by Rocky Point High School student musicians. Social studies teacher Mr. Richard Acritelli led the program, introducing student and guest speakers throughout the morning.
Students stepped to the podium to honor the four Rocky Point High School graduates who lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001. Their stories served as a powerful reminder that the tragedy reached deeply into the Rocky Point community and that the lives of those who were lost continue to be remembered.
The assembly also featured guest speakers who shared their firsthand experiences from Sept. 11 and its aftermath, providing students with personal perspectives on a day that has shaped American history. Speakers included NYPD Emergency Services Unit Lt. Owen McCaffrey; Suffolk County Legislator and U.S. Marine Corps Lt. Colonel Chad Lennon; New York Air National Guard and Suffolk County Police veteran Jack Brehm; professional baseball player and New York City Fire Patrolman Frank Tepedino; and Rocky Point High School graduate and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Lt. Colonel Nicholas LoRusso.
Through their stories, the speakers encouraged students to never forget those who were lost and to carry forward the legacy of the days and months following the attacks, when Americans came together to support one another and help their neighbors.
The assembly provided an opportunity for the Rocky Point High School community to pause, remember and reflect – honoring those who lost their lives while reminding a new generation of the importance of compassion, unity and service.
