About:
Continuing an annual tradition to raise awareness about breast cancer, Berner Middle School in the Massapequa School District hosted Think Pink Day on Oct. 23. Students and staff wore pink shirts and raised money for an important cause.
During lunch periods, the student council sold Berner Think Pink T-shirts and students could get their faces painted by teachers in exchange for a small donation. Student council advisers Denise Robertson and Kristen Meoli explained that Think Pink Day has continued every year for the last decade for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
“Over the years,” Ms. Robertson said, “we’ve made extremely generous donations because of the support of the students and the staff.”
The Chiefs Challenge Club, under the direction of advisers Marisa Boulukos and Caroline Glynn, sold pink scrunchies during lunch periods, an idea that came from the students and generated several hundred dollars. The club also placed Think Pink banners in the hallways and cafeterias. Students could write messages of hope and support on pink sticky notes to place on the banners.
Money raised from Berner students and staff was donated to the Babylon Breast Cancer Coalition, which provides patient services and other financial support to people battling all gynecological cancers, and the Side-Out Foundation, which supports the development of treatments for breast cancer patients.
“We do Think Pink Day every year,” Principal Jason Esposito said, “and it always gets better and better. The level of commitment by our staff is reflected in the excitement and spirit of our students. We are so grateful for all of their participation and generosity.”
