About:
Bretton Woods Elementary proudly hosted its third annual First Responder Appreciation Day, welcoming more than 70 local heroes from fire, police, and emergency service agencies as honored guests. Despite the rain, the school community came together for a heartfelt indoor ceremony to celebrate and thank the brave individuals who protect and serve us every day — many of whom are parents, relatives, and friends of our students and staff.
The morning began with a moving flag presentation and a performance of the Star-Spangled Banner by the MTA band, setting a patriotic tone for the event. Students and guests were then inspired by a lineup of powerful speakers, including:
-
Robert Wind, a 1972 Hauppauge High School graduate, retired FDNY firefighter, and current Hauppauge volunteer firefighter
-
Port Authority Officer Thomas Coysh and his K9 partner, Fita
-
Officer Keri McCarthy, Arlington, Virginia Police Officer and proud alumna of both Bretton Woods and Hauppauge High School
Adding to the emotional resonance of the ceremony, Officer McCarthy’s father — a retired Nassau County police officer — performed a touching bagpipe tribute. One of the day’s most memorable moments came from fifth grader Teagan Parchen, who delivered a heartfelt speech in honor of her father, an NYPD officer, who was present for the ceremony.
The event concluded with a stirring rendition of “God Bless America” performed by the Bretton Woods Advanced Orchestra, under the direction of Mr. Keith Demaio.
It was a day filled with gratitude, reflection, and pride as the Bretton Woods community came together to honor the everyday heroes who serve with courage and compassion. Events like this not only deepen the connection between our schools and community, but also instill in students the importance of respect, service, and civic pride.
Thank you to all our first responders — your bravery and dedication do not go unnoticed.
