About:
Carle Place High School students recently demonstrated the power of service, leadership, and community engagement during the district’s annual Day of Service, participating in a variety of hands-on projects designed to make a meaningful impact both within and beyond their school community.
The day provided students with the opportunity to select workshops and service experiences aligned with causes they are passionate about. Workshop themes included Honoring Our Veterans, Community Support & Outreach, Gardening & Environmental Preservation, Helping Others & Health Awareness, Creative & School Projects, and Helping Other Carle Place Students.
By allowing students to choose projects that reflected their interests and values, the event encouraged meaningful participation while empowering students to become active contributors to their communities.
Many students took their service efforts off campus, partnering with local organizations to address community needs. At Wheatley Farms & Art Center, operated by AHRC Nassau, students worked alongside individuals with disabilities, assisting with animal care and gardening activities while building connections and fostering inclusion.
Others volunteered at Pal-O-Mine Equestrian, where they helped with ranch maintenance and supported therapeutic riding programs that benefit individuals with special needs. Students also participated in environmental stewardship projects at Garvey’s Point Preserve, helping restore natural spaces through trail maintenance and beach clean-up efforts.
Additional groups focused on supporting local residents through acts of service. Students provided yard work and light landscaping assistance for senior citizens with limited mobility, helping improve outdoor spaces while building relationships across generations. Others offered one-on-one technology support to seniors, helping bridge the digital divide and increase access to technology resources.
Students also volunteered with the Long Island Coalition for the Homeless, where they sorted donations at “The Boutique” and learned about the challenges facing individuals and families experiencing homelessness throughout Long Island. The experience provided valuable insight into community needs while helping support essential services for vulnerable populations.
The Day of Service showcased the many ways young people can create positive change when given opportunities to lead and serve. Whether supporting individuals with disabilities, caring for the environment, assisting seniors, or helping those facing housing insecurity, Carle Place students demonstrated compassion, responsibility, and a commitment to making their community stronger.
Through these experiences, students not only provided valuable assistance to local organizations but also gained a deeper understanding of the importance of civic engagement and service leadership.
