About:
Each October, the Chisago Lakes Volleyball program comes together in a powerful display of unity, generosity, and school pride as they host their annual “Pink Out” match in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The tradition, held during their rivalry match against North Branch, has become one of the most meaningful and celebrated events of the season.
Every other year, Chisago Lakes has the honor of hosting the matchup — and with it, the opportunity to transform their home gym into a sea of pink. Players, coaches, families, and fans proudly wear custom “Pink Out” shirts, with orders open to the full community. Spectators are encouraged to pack the gym dressed head-to-toe in pink, and the team decorates the space to ensure that every person who walks in knows they are supporting something bigger than volleyball.
The excitement builds long before the first serve through social media posts, gym decorations, and even local newspaper coverage. But the centerpiece of the night is the beloved “Kills for Cancer” pledge drive, a spirited fundraiser that turns every spike into support for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.
As fans enter the gym, they are invited to pledge a dollar amount for each kill earned by their team. Their pledges are displayed proudly on posters throughout the gym. During the match, the scoreboard is continuously updated with kill totals, and the announcer shares live fundraising updates — creating an electric atmosphere where every point carries purpose. At the end of the match, fans stop by the booth to fulfill their pledges, celebrating both the final score and the impact they’ve made together.
Coach Hannah Lindstrom shared that the event is not only fun and energizing, but deeply meaningful for her players. The “Pink Out” match reminds them that their effort on the court contributes to something far more significant than the outcome of the game. It’s a chance to play with heart, honor those affected by breast cancer, and bring their community together in a powerful act of support.
For Chisago Lakes Volleyball, this tradition has become one of the most special moments of the year — proving once again that when a community rallies behind a cause, the results are inspiring both on and off the court.
