About:
The Clarkstown Hockey Team continues to demonstrate what it means to lead with heart, service, and community pride. This weekend, the team rolled up their sleeves and participated in Operation Leaf Drop, an inspiring annual initiative founded five years ago by local resident Joe Cortelli. What began as a small idea has grown each year and is now organized by local veterans who are committed to helping elderly veterans, 9/11 survivors, and widowed spouses with their fall cleanups.
This year’s effort brought together more than 60 volunteers, all working in coordinated teams across the county. In total, 13 homes received support—each one belonging to someone who has served or sacrificed for their community.
The Clarkstown Hockey Team was assigned to four locations throughout Upper Nyack, Congers, and New City, where players spent the morning raking leaves, clearing debris, bagging yard waste, and preparing properties for the winter season. With teamwork, positive energy, and deep respect for those they were assisting, the student-athletes made a meaningful difference for every household they visited.
Operation Leaf Drop isn’t just about yard work—it’s about connection. Throughout the day, volunteers had the chance to speak with veterans and first responders, hear their stories, and thank them directly for their service. Those moments of gratitude are often the most impactful part of the experience.
The Clarkstown Hockey Team may be participating in another service event later this month, continuing their commitment to giving back. Their involvement in Operation Leaf Drop reflects the true spirit of high school athletics: leadership, compassion, responsibility, and community engagement.
By stepping up to serve those who have served us, these student-athletes showed that their impact reaches far beyond the rink.
