About:
The Durfee High School Girls Volleyball team recently demonstrated strong leadership off the court by hosting a Mental Health Awareness Game during their matchup against Brockton. The event brought attention to the importance of supporting student well-being and creating a school culture where every individual feels seen, valued, and supported.
A meaningful moment of the evening came before the first serve, when team captain and DurfeeCares member Riley Currin addressed teammates, opponents, and spectators. Her words helped set the tone for the night, reinforcing the powerful message behind the event — You Matter. By speaking openly about mental health, Riley helped encourage understanding and compassion while reminding others that it is okay to seek help and support.
The initiative also highlighted the role student-athletes can play in driving awareness and positive change within their communities. Through partnerships and collaboration with organizations focused on mental health advocacy, the event created an opportunity to spark conversation and reduce stigma around an issue that impacts many young people.
Mental Health Awareness Games like this continue to make a lasting impact by using athletics as a platform to promote connection, empathy, and resilience. The Durfee Girls Volleyball program’s commitment to supporting mental health reflects the leadership and character that student-athletes bring beyond competition.
By stepping up to advocate for an important cause, the team strengthened school spirit and showed how sports can unite communities around messages of hope, encouragement, and care.
