About:
This past summer, Duxbury High School senior Sam Szczesny led a meaningful initiative to support students in need — organizing a backpack and school supply drive alongside his football teammates.
The Duxbury High School Football Program has maintained a strong connection with the Dorchester Boys and Girls Club since 2010, a tradition started by former head coach Dave Maimaron. Over the years, the team hosted kids from the Dorchester club at games and organized drives for coats and toys. That legacy of giving has continued under current head coach Matt Landolfi, who took the reins in 2021.
Szczesny, who grew up watching these efforts as a youth program participant and water boy, was inspired to expand the team’s outreach in a new direction. “Going into my senior year, I thought it would be cool to do something new and different,” he said. “Growing up, most Duxbury kids have the privilege of getting new school supplies whenever they need them. Just 30 miles away in Dorchester, that’s not always the case.”
That realization sparked the idea for a backpack and school supply drive to help make sure kids at the Boys and Girls Club started the school year prepared and confident. Szczesny spread the word through social media and leaned on his teammates and coaches to help promote the effort across the community.
The team set Friday, August 8th as the deadline for donations, and the response was overwhelming. In total, they delivered over 50 backpacks and enough school supplies for about 100 children. Donations came from people throughout the Duxbury community and football program, reflecting the town’s generosity and team spirit.
Thanks to the leadership of student-athletes like Sam, Duxbury Football continues to make a lasting impact both on and off the field.
