About:
For the past decade, the Obama School of Social Justice, alongside Mahopac, Clarkstown North, and Briarcliff, has united to host a special tournament in honor of cancer survivors and those currently battling the disease. What began as a simple gathering of teams has evolved into a meaningful tradition, bringing together athletes, coaches, and the community in the fight against cancer.
A key figure in this initiative is Ms. Rosa Kastsaridis, a dedicated staff member at Obama School of Social Justice. Every year, she plays a vital role in organizing the event and generously donates resources, including sponsoring t-shirts for all participating athletes and coaches. Her commitment to this cause is deeply personal, as she honors the memory of her father-in-law, who passed away from lung cancer. For Ms. Rosa, and many others involved, this tournament holds a special significance.
The event, known as the Coaches vs. Cancer Tournament: ‘Friends vs. Cancer,’ raises funds through donations collected at the door, as well as proceeds from the concession stand. Depending on the year, these funds are either donated directly to a student or faculty member within the school community who is battling cancer or contributed to the American Cancer Society.
Beyond fundraising, the tournament serves as an educational opportunity for student-athletes. Through their participation, they gain a deeper understanding of cancer’s impact and develop a sense of unity and resilience. Athletes, alongside community volunteers, take on responsibilities such as selling snacks and collecting donations, further strengthening their connection to the cause.
Each year, the event is marked by heartfelt moments of recognition. Last year, the tournament honored Lou Gaudio, a dedicated referee and throat cancer survivor. Additionally, Coach Stahn’s father, himself a cancer survivor, was recognized for his strength and perseverance. This year was particularly memorable as the Obama School of Social Justice (formerly PAL Prep) secured the tournament trophy for the first time in its history.
For the school’s athletic director, who took on the role four years ago, this tournament carries deep personal significance. Having lost their mother to ovarian cancer, they feel honored to contribute to an event that not only raises awareness and funds but also fosters a sense of community and support for those affected by cancer.
The ‘Friends vs. Cancer’ tournament continues to be a testament to the power of sports in making a difference. Through competition, camaraderie, and compassion, the athletes and organizers ensure that the fight against cancer remains at the forefront, proving that together, they are stronger.
