About:
The spirit of community and teamwork was on full display as student-athletes volunteered at the Hudson Mohawk Marathon, lending their energy and support to runners throughout the event.
From cheering on participants to helping with water stations, managing logistics, and assisting with clean-up, the athletes played an important role in making the marathon a success.
Each year, the Hudson Mohawk Road Runners Club invites groups to volunteer at the Hudson Mohawk Half and Full Marathon held over Columbus Day weekend. The Boys and Girls Cross Country programs have proudly participated since 2012, setting up tables, filling cups with water and Gatorade, and handing them out to runners during both races. The event has become a cherished team tradition and a meaningful opportunity for the athletes to give back to the running community that supports them year-round.
This year, 43 athletes, three coaches, and two parents volunteered at the event, contributing their time and enthusiasm to help ensure a smooth and successful marathon experience for all participants.
Several seniors shared what the experience means to them:
“I think it’s great to volunteer and give back to the running community, especially when so many individuals and runners volunteer for our own meets. I also love cheering on people during their races, especially when so many spectators do the same at our high school races.” — Helen Ketzer, Senior
“I like volunteering at the water stop because it feels good to give back to the running community. Everyone does so much for us at our meets and races, so it’s nice to be able to do the same for other people.” — Sabine Yannone, Senior
“It’s a good experience and I’m always happy to help out at such a big event.” — Alex Breig, Senior
“It’s great seeing so many members of the community come together every year to support the runners and to also be a part of it.” — Johnny Edick, Senior
Through their dedication and community spirit, the Cross Country teams continue to embody what it means to lead through service — showing that the true finish line isn’t just in the race, but in the impact they make along the way.
