About:
This year’s Harold’s Hoops for Hope event was the biggest yet — featuring food trucks, special guests including a former New York Knick signing autographs, coverage from News 12, and support from local politicians. You can see photos from the event at www.HaroldsHoopsforHope.org.
The journey began in 2022, when Harold Teller, then a 12-year-old member of the National Junior Honor Society, wrote an essay about community service. Deeply concerned about the rise in adolescent and teen suicide, especially in the wake of COVID-19, Harold wanted to take action. He reflected on how basketball provided joy, connection, and an outlet during isolation — and decided to channel that into a cause that mattered.
Harold organized a 3v3 basketball tournament to raise funds for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP). With help from a supportive coach who offered his gym and local sponsors who covered event costs, Harold launched Hoops for Hope. Over 100 players signed up, and the inaugural event was a success.
In 2024, Harold hosted a second tournament, and to date, has raised $17,650 for the AFSP. He also founded his own nonprofit — Harold’s Hoops for Hope — to continue hosting tournaments and expand efforts to raise awareness around youth mental health and suicide prevention.
Harold’s mission is simple but powerful: to let kids and teens know they’re not alone. It’s OK not to be OK — and through sports, community, and open dialogue, Harold is helping make that message heard.
