About:
The Hilton Girls Soccer Program in Hilton, NY, is once again taking the field for a cause that has been central to its mission for over three decades. From October 1 to October 15, 2024, the program will host its annual 15-Day Breast Cancer Awareness Challenge, a cherished tradition that began in 1992. What started as a local effort to raise awareness and funds for breast cancer has grown into a comprehensive community service initiative, involving not only the players but also families, alumni, and community members.
Throughout the years, the program has raised over $60,000, with funds benefiting organizations like the Breast Cancer Coalition of Rochester (BCCR). About five years ago, the program connected with BCCR, a local organization providing support to individuals and families affected by breast cancer in the Rochester area. Since then, Hilton Girls Soccer has been dedicated to not only raising awareness for breast cancer but also educating the community about BCCR’s impactful work.
The campaign kicked off on October 1, with players, coaches, and supporters using social media to boost donations. The program established an online donation platform with a QR code for easy access, encouraging contributions from a wide audience. Community support extended beyond the soccer field, with staff joining a Dress Down Week fundraiser, and the Varsity Football team displaying pink ribbons on their helmets to show solidarity.
The initiative’s focal point will be the Kick Out Cancer Games on October 12. The day will start with the JV game at 10 a.m. on LeBeau Field, featuring a pre-game ribbon formation by both teams to honor those affected by breast cancer. A tribute walk around the track will follow, further symbolizing the program’s commitment to the cause. The Modified team will also compete at 10 a.m. on the high school field, with the Varsity game set for noon. During halftime, the scoreboard will be used to share educational messages about BCCR, and the event will include an “I Play For” tribute by athletes and a check presentation to a BCCR representative.
Volunteers, including players and parents, will engage in a variety of fundraising activities throughout the day, such as selling t-shirts and bracelets and hosting a 50/50 raffle, with all proceeds supporting the campaign’s goals.
Pam Stadtmiller, JV Hilton Girls Soccer Coach, emphasizes that the annual challenge serves as much more than a fundraiser. “This is much bigger than the game,” she shares, reflecting on the values the program aims to impart. By participating in the challenge, student-athletes learn important life skills, including resilience, perseverance, and the courage to face adversity—qualities that extend beyond the soccer field and into everyday life. For Hilton Girls Soccer, the effort is about building a stronger, more compassionate community, one that stands united in the fight against breast cancer.
