About:
On Wednesday, February 28, 2024, Garden City High School’s gymnasium was abuzz with excitement as it kicked off the Challenger Basketball Season with an intra-squad game, all in support of Hoops for Hope. Orchestrated by GCHS students Michael O’Hanlon and Katherine O’Hanlon, alongside the parents of the late Bobby Menges, this event aimed to raise funds for the “I’m Not Done Foundation” while honoring Bobby’s memory.
The atmosphere crackled with energy as the gym filled to capacity, drawing alumni, staff, administration, and community members united in their support. Decorated with inspiring posters crafted by elementary students, the gym echoed the unity and solidarity of the cause.
Taking center stage as the master of ceremonies, Michael O’Hanlon set the tone for an evening of both competition and compassion. The Challenger Basketball Season commenced with an intra-squad game, showcasing the players’ talents and camaraderie while rallying behind the mission of Hoops for Hope.
However, this event transcended basketball; it embodied a celebration of community spirit. Halftime intermissions featured lively performances by the GCHS Cheer and kickline teams, adding an extra layer of entertainment and enthusiasm. These acts not only entertained but also showcased the diverse talents within the school community.
Throughout the afternoon, the underlying message of resilience and support resonated strongly. The “I’m Not Done Foundation,” championed by Hoops for Hope, stood as a beacon of hope for those facing adversity, emphasizing perseverance and determination.
As the final buzzer sounded and the game concluded, it was clear that Hoops for Hope had achieved its goal of uniting people for a meaningful cause. Beyond the thrill of the game, the event forged connections, strengthened bonds, and inspired attendees to continue supporting each other, on and off the court.
In honor of Bobby Menges’ enduring legacy, Hoops for Hope showcased the profound impact a united community can achieve. Through their collective efforts, Michael O’Hanlon, Katherine O’Hanlon, and the entire GCHS community demonstrated that they are not done—they are just beginning to make a difference in the lives of others.
