About:

We had a junior student-athlete, Emily Bulone organize a three day field trip to the Van Duyn Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing Center. VanDuyn is a short term and long term care and skilled nursing facility in Syracuse, NY.  We participated with the residents during the social events programming calendar on those days.

In total we had approximately 80 student-athletes and 6 coaches participate in the three day event on December 21, 2022, Jan 11, 2023, and Jan 18, 2023.  Emily completed all the necessary paperwork to get the appropriate approval.  She met with the athletic director to organize the plan. Then met with the high school principal as well as the superintendent of schools for final approval.  Once approved, she actively promoted the program and started recruiting student-athletes to sign up for the events. At the same time, she was coordinating events with the VanDuyn staff.  The student-athletes went and worked with the residents during the scheduled social events programming.

Athletic Director John Goodson, “The day I attended was Dec 21st and we worked on arts and crafts.  It was around the holiday so we assisted in making paper snowflakes to hang in the rooms. We also assisted in making christmas gifts for the residents to share with each other at the holiday party.  In addition to the snowflake activities we had holiday cookies with the residents. It was great to see the student-athletes interacting with the residents and absolutely beautiful to see the smile on the faces of the residents and students.”

Head Coach Jeff Cantor, “Emily is one of a kind. She truly cares more about others than herself.  She is the definition of selfless.”
