About:

The event is held every year on the Saturday before Thanksgiving. Even though the “Stuff a Bus” takes place on this day, food is collected throughout the year and distributed through the Kings Park High School Food Pantry which is also operated by members of the Varsity club and who’s inventory is maintained and organized by members of the LifeSkills Class at the High School.

In the weeks leading up to Thanksgiving the school nurses determine how many families in need we will be helping for Thanksgiving. This year we provided Thanksgiving meals for upwards of 30 families.

The Varsity Club Members sort the food and pack it for distribution after the food is transported from the Food Store to the High School Gym. When the food arrives at the High School Gym each group of students is assigned a family to “shop” for by collecting the necessary items for Thanksgiving and beyond. The excess food goes to the food pantry for distribution throughout the year. The families then pick up the food in the days leading up to the holiday.

We had approximately 50 Varsity Club members at the Food Store that day and another 30 students helping to pack the food back at the school.

The Varsity Club continues its charitable work throughout the Holiday Season by adopting families and coordinating gift purchases for children and families in need through a “Mitten Tree” from which mittens are chosen listing what needs each family has.
