About:
The Lynbrook High School girls lacrosse team recently stepped onto the field for more than just a win—they played with purpose, heart, and a message that extends far beyond the scoreboard. Hosting their Morgan’s Message game, the team joined a growing national movement to raise awareness around mental health in athletics.
Spearheaded by student-athlete ambassador Payton Stalter, the event honored the legacy of Morgan Rodgers, a former collegiate lacrosse player whose story continues to inspire athletes across the country to speak openly about mental health. For Lynbrook’s lacrosse program, the game was about more than awareness—it was a commitment.
“As a program, we believe it’s our responsibility to support our athletes not just physically, but emotionally,” said Coach Joe LaBarbera. “Hosting this game gives us a powerful way to break the stigma around mental health.”
The team didn’t just talk the talk—they led by example. Players courageously shared their own experiences with mental health, reminding peers and fans alike that behind every jersey is a human being. The message was clear: strength includes vulnerability, and it’s okay to ask for help.
In preparation for the game, the team designed custom shirts and raised over $1,750 for Morgan’s Message, with the community showing up in force to support the cause. “It’s about showing we’re here for each other both on and off the field.”
The impact of the event rippled well beyond the lacrosse field. Conversations about mental health sparked throughout the school and wider community, reinforcing the message that no one has to struggle alone.
Lynbrook’s Morgan’s Message game served as a powerful reminder: when we prioritize the human over the athlete, we create space for connection, healing, and lasting change.
