About:
When Coach Jonathan Dunn was hired as the head varsity baseball coach at Medfield High School, one of his main off-the-field goals was to increase his team’s involvement in the local community, specifically the Medfield Youth Baseball program. He recognized the importance of having his players be active role models for younger athletes and inspiring them to one day play high school baseball.
Over the past couple of years, the Medfield baseball program has worked hard to build a presence in the community, and when Dan Kinne, a member of the Medfield Youth Baseball & Softball board, reached out to ask if a few players could help prep the fields, Coach Dunn jumped at the opportunity. He saw this as a chance for his team to give back to the program that played such a significant role in shaping them as athletes.
A group of 22 Junior Varsity and Varsity players turned up on a cold, rainy afternoon, ready to roll up their sleeves. Armed with rakes, shovels, and edgers, they spent from 12 to 3 p.m. working diligently to prepare the fields. Their tasks included weeding the four fields, weed-whacking and raking the batting cages, picking up trash, raking leaves, cleaning around the bleachers, and making sure the fields were in top shape for the upcoming season.
Despite the dreary weather, Coach Dunn was impressed by the players’ dedication and attitude. “I can honestly say that even though it was cold and rainy, I did not hear a single complaint,” he said. “I think they all understood the importance of what they were doing and that they were helping get the fields ready for the kids to play on.”
Coach Dunn’s commitment to fostering community involvement and instilling values of service in his players reflects the core mission of the Medfield Varsity Baseball team. By giving back, the team not only strengthens its connection to the community but also sets a positive example for the next generation of athletes.
