About:
On September 23rd, the Medfield High School Field Hockey team took on Ashland in a special game dedicated to Mental Health Awareness. The 4:00 PM home match was more than just a competition—it was a powerful opportunity for the team and the community to unite in support of an important cause.
The Mental Health Awareness game, which began last year, was initiated by former captains Mikayla Malmquist and Maeve Kelly. Inspired by a conference for student-athletes that addressed mental health, Mikayla brought the message back to her team, recognizing how mental health challenges impact her and many others daily. This year’s captains, Maeve Kelly, Adeline Keaveney, and Emily Fratolillo, continued the tradition by organizing the event and creating signs with encouraging and positive messages for those struggling with mental health or supporting loved ones who are.
The players and fans didn’t just come together to cheer on the team—they also rallied to raise awareness about mental health. The field and stands were decorated with green and white streamers, and the team wore green ribbons on their uniforms and in their hair to show solidarity. The event was a powerful reminder of the role sports can play in promoting well-being both on and off the field.
As the senior tricaptains shared, “Every year, we dedicate time in our season to causes that are special to our team. Mental health is an extremely relevant issue, especially for high schoolers and athletes, and we believe it’s important to recognize it. Many of our teammates also lead mental health clubs at Medfield High School, so this cause is close to everyone’s heart.”
The Medfield HS Field Hockey team has once again used game day to champion an important cause, showing that sports can be a platform for positive change.
