Glen Head resident Lenar Angelo and Anthony, both North Shore High School sophomores, organized the event to honor community veterans for their service and to give them greater visibility.
“We wanted it to be a school event,” Scarola said. “where the whole school comes together and throws this celebration of the veterans.”
He, Angelo, and Anthony reached out to several student organizations along with the administration and veterans to put the night together.
“I’m really happy that the whole school can come,” Anthony said. “It doesn’t matter what, photography, basketball, cheerleading, and we even got so many fans, and everyone can come and really be a part of it. Everyone has their role.”
In addition to the ceremony, donations were being collected to support the veterans. Funds will go toward Uber transportation for veterans who may not have the means to make it to doctor’s appointments and toward Stop & Shop gift cards.
For one veteran, this event meant visibility and inspiring people. Salvatore Bombardiere served in the Army National Guard in Hempstead before being an active duty supply sergeant in Huntington Station. He later joined the Air Force and served in the Air National Guard in Roslyn. Bombardiere retired out of the military following 9/11.
Bombardiere said the opportunity “felt great.”
“It means that we’re getting back into the world, more or less,” he explained. “So they can see us and realize this is where your freedoms come from type thing, hopefully, and that maybe they’ll get interested in doing the same.”
North Shore will hold a second Veteran Appreciation night on Feb. 6 when the women’s junior varsity and varsity basketball teams face Locust Valley.
