The Orono Spartans Girls High School Hockey team recently showed how athletics can serve as a powerful platform for community connection and meaningful impact by hosting a Military Appreciation Event during their matchup against the Dodge County Wildcats.
Held on a Saturday afternoon and featuring both junior varsity and varsity contests, the event created an energetic and heartfelt atmosphere for players, families, and fans. Designed to honor military service members and support military families, the initiative raised awareness and funds for the United Heroes League, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping children of military families stay active and engaged through sports opportunities.
It was a special day for both schools, with approximately 60 players participating, along with coaches and team managers who all contributed to the success of the event. One of the most meaningful elements was the custom-designed jerseys worn by the Orono players. Each athlete selected a branch of the military that holds personal significance to their family, which was displayed on the back of the jersey in place of their last name. This powerful tribute highlighted the deep connections many players have to military service and honored those who serve within their community.
The front of the jerseys carried just as much symbolism. The Orono “O” features detailed artwork that incorporates the American flag alongside the iconic image of soldiers raising the flag at Iwo Jima, creating a striking visual reminder of sacrifice, unity, and national pride.
The idea for the event was rooted in strong relationships and a shared passion for giving back. Former Orono girls hockey coach Paul Antonenko had supported United Heroes League for years, both personally and through his business, and understood the organization’s meaningful impact. When a game was scheduled against Dodge County, Antonenko connected with Wildcats head coach Jeremy Gunderson — a coach he had built a strong relationship with — to explore the possibility of making the matchup more significant. Gunderson immediately embraced the idea, and what began as a conversation quickly evolved into a special outdoor event centered on service and community.
Both teams helped elevate the experience by designing custom jerseys for the game, while Minnesota Wild anthem singer John DeCausmaker delivered a memorable performance of the National Anthem. Fire pits were set up outside to keep fans warm in the winter weather, and concessions featuring hot cocoa, coffee, and snacks added to the welcoming, community-focused atmosphere.
Rather than selling traditional game tickets, the teams encouraged attendees to donate directly to the United Heroes League. The community’s response was overwhelming. The event raised $2,600 through donations at the game, and two anonymous donors contributed an additional $1,000 each, bringing the total impact to $4,600.
According to United Heroes League CEO Shane Hudella, the fundraiser marked the largest single-team contribution in the organization’s history, making the experience even more meaningful for everyone involved.
The Military Appreciation Event highlighted the leadership, compassion, and initiative of Orono’s student-athletes, who used their platform to support an important cause while honoring those who serve. By combining competition with service, the Spartans demonstrated how high school athletics can help strengthen community bonds and create lasting positive impact.
