About:
At Penfield High School, our basketball program offers young men the chance to compete at a high athletic level while also learning the values of teamwork, discipline, and hard work. We believe these lessons extend beyond the court and competition. Off the court, our coaches emphasize the importance of working together and serving others and our community. Giving back to the Greater Rochester community provides our players with perspective on the struggles faced by some, highlighting the importance of selfless service.
One such opportunity is the Blessed Sacrament Supper Program, which supports some of the most vulnerable individuals in our area. Over the past two years, the Penfield Varsity Boys Basketball team has participated in serving dinner twice to our fellow citizens. This experience has allowed our players to give back and recognize the impact they can have outside of athletics, while also offering perspective on the true value of basketball games. This connection was initiated by Erin McCarthy, Penfield Boys Basketball Booster Club Secretary and President-Elect, who became familiar with the program through her family’s previous volunteer work with the supper program and her friendship with Kim Thompson, who has organized monthly support in memory of Tom Parsons. The varsity players expressed a sincere appreciation for the opportunity to work at the supper program, engage with the attendees while serving them a hearty meal and give back to the community that they love so much.
Since 1992, Blessed Sacrament Parish and countless volunteers have provided the Supper Program to help the most vulnerable members of our community. While the challenges faced by many of the guests are varied, the program’s mission is simple: to provide a warm, nutritious meal and a welcoming, safe environment for social interaction. When the program began, most guests were homeless. Today, many have housing and are employed, but their limited incomes still make assistance with healthy meals necessary and appreciated. Over 300 volunteers help prepare and serve meals to approximately 450 guests every week. The program relies on the generosity of Foodlink, Wegmans, Samaritan Harvest, and many local businesses.
For over 33 years, the Supper Program has provided a safe place for fellowship and a good meal, thanks to the dedication and kindness of volunteers. Our players are honored to be part of this meaningful initiative. As you can imagine the program can always use more support. Donations—both food and financial—are always welcome and appreciated.
