About:
At Pines Elementary School in the Hauppauge School District, the Future Corps Club, led by kindergarten teacher Ellen Rand and art teacher Meg Catapano, is fostering meaningful connections between students and the residents of the Arbors Assisted Living at Hauppauge. This unique initiative runs during the winter months with weekly visits that brighten both the students’ and residents’ days.
Each visit, the students and residents bond over games, crafts and heartfelt conversations. Weekly activities are thoughtfully themed, often aligning with holidays such as Thanksgiving and Christmas to make each visit special.
“The goal of the Future Corps Club is to connect students with local residents,” shared Ms. Catapano. “These interactions teach our students the value of community and compassion while bringing so much joy to the residents.”
“These visits are often the highlight of the week for everyone involved,” added Ms. Rand. “The smiles, laughter and bonds formed here remind us of the power of simple, heartfelt connections.”
Both students and residents look forward to these weekly visits with shared memories becoming a hallmark of their time together. The Future Corps Club highlights the transformative power of intergenerational connections, proving that age is no barrier to friendship.
