Athletics served as a powerful expression of compassion and unity as the Northbridge Rams and Sutton High School Athletics came together for a meaningful game-day tribute at the Vet.
In a visible show of solidarity, both teams wore special T-shirts honoring Gretel, the daughter of a 1994 Northbridge graduate and former Rams boys basketball captain. Gretel was undergoing treatment for Acute Myeloid Leukemia, a rare and aggressive form of pediatric blood cancer. The tribute reflected deep roots within the Northbridge community, as Gretel’s father had played alongside the current varsity head coach and had been coached by his father. When the idea to honor Gretel and her family was raised, the response was immediate and unanimous.
The moment extended far beyond the scoreboard. Students, athletes, coaches, and fans stood together in support, using the platform of high school athletics to raise awareness, offer hope, and remind Gretel and her family that they were not alone. The tribute embodied the strength of a community rallying around one of its own during an incredibly difficult time.
Gretel’s journey began in August 2025 following her diagnosis. Known by those who love her as kind, caring, and gentle, Gretel’s quiet strength was on full display as she faced intensive treatment, including chemotherapy and extended inpatient care. As her family navigated the emotional, physical, and financial challenges of her diagnosis, the support shown by the Northbridge and Sutton communities provided a powerful source of encouragement.
