About:

Locust Valley High school volleyball players know how to dig deep on and off the court. Varsity and junior varsity players worked together to raise funds for breast cancer research prior to their annual Dig Pink game against Glen Cove High School. A pre-game bake sale included pink frosted cupcakes, chocolate candies shaped as cancer awareness ribbons and other deliciously pink-themed treats.

Nearly $600 was raised in just a few hours as the girls set up their goods on a table in the main lobby immediately after school on Thursday, Oct. 5. The teams wore a uniform of a different kind during the bake sale. Their black T-shirts showed off an image of a pink volleyball with the words Dig Pink, which was also in the iconic breast cancer awareness color.

Dig Pink is a national breast cancer rally organized by the Side-Out Foundation, which encourages middle school and high school volleyball teams to hold events supporting the cause each October. For the past eight years, the Falcons have been playing their Dig Pink nonleague games against Glen Cove High School.

The pink games began following the bake sale and featured pink volleyballs. Junior varsity volleyball coach Janet Ratner said the girls had a great time while helping a great cause.

“I’m thrilled that the varsity and junior varsity volleyball teams rallied together to raise so much money,” she said. “The icing on the cake came when the varsity team defeated Glen Cove, and now will retain the coveted “Dig Pink” trophy.”
