About:
It was more than just a game for Yorktown High School Athletics. On April 8, the Girls Lacrosse team took the field at Murphy Field for a deeply meaningful evening—“Play for Shera,” a memorial game held in honor of Sheridan Gorman.
The night brought together athletes, families, and the entire community in a powerful show of love, remembrance, and support. While the game itself was competitive, every moment carried deeper meaning—serving as a tribute to Sheridan’s life and the lasting impact she had on those around her.
A Community United in Purpose
In the weeks leading up to the event, the team and coaching staff worked closely with the community to create a night that truly reflected who Sheridan was—a bright light known for her kindness, positivity, and selflessness.
Local businesses played a meaningful role in supporting the cause. Sports Barn partnered with the team to design and sell commemorative shirts, generously donating proceeds to Sheridan’s scholarship fund. The Poppery contributed cake pops for sale at the game, with all proceeds also benefiting the fundraiser.
A Night of Reflection and Strength
The turnout was overwhelming, a true testament to the impact Sheridan had on her community. Players took pride in helping organize and promote the event, ensuring every detail honored her memory.
During the evening, team captains and coaches shared heartfelt remarks alongside Sheridan’s parents, Jess and Tom Gorman. These moments created a space for reflection, unity, and collective strength—reminding everyone in attendance that they were not alone.
Playing for Something Greater
Beyond fundraising efforts, the night—and the entire season—has taken on a deeper purpose for the Yorktown program. The team is dedicating their season to Sheridan, striving to embody the same compassion and spirit she brought to those around her.
Memorial games like “Play for Shera” highlight the true power of education-based athletics. They provide healing, connection, and a sense of purpose during difficult times—showing that sports can bring people together in the most meaningful ways.
And while the team earned a win that night, the real victory was something far greater—a community united, a life honored, and a legacy that will continue to inspire.
