About:
At Malden Catholic, one week stands out every year as a powerful demonstration of school spirit and community support: Project Blackout. This initiative brings students, faculty, and athletes together to raise awareness and funds for important causes through a series of coordinated events, including pep rallies and special “blackout” games.
The roots of Project Blackout run deep, originating in Windham, NH, where Athletic Director Bill Raycraft first introduced the event. When he joined Malden Catholic a few years ago, he brought the tradition along with him, expanding its reach and impact across the school’s athletic programs. Today, it’s a celebration embraced by various teams, from cheerleading and football to soccer and track, showcasing the broad participation and commitment to making a difference.
Throughout the week, students and faculty don black t-shirts—purchased specifically for Project Blackout—with proceeds from the sales supporting the initiative’s cause. The school’s cheer team also steps up with additional donations, further demonstrating the spirit of generosity and unity. The week kicks off with a high-energy pep rally, setting the tone for the following days filled with special games where teams wear black to show their support.
The excitement doesn’t end after one week; many sports teams continue to host blackout games in the weeks that follow, keeping the momentum going and reminding everyone of the important message behind the event. Project Blackout isn’t just about school spirit—it’s a collective effort to support meaningful causes, fostering a sense of community and purpose among students and staff alike.
To learn more about Project Blackout’s origins, growth, and impact, Bill Raycraft, the driving force behind the initiative, is always happy to share the full story. His leadership has not only maintained the tradition but has also strengthened its presence at Malden Catholic, ensuring that each year, Project Blackout brings the community closer and continues to make a difference.
