About:
Students at John Dinkelmeyer Elementary School in the North Bellmore School District contributed to a good cause while also improving their literacy skills.
To help people affected by Hurricane Harvey, the school hosted a read-athon in September. Students were encouraged to spend at least five minutes a day reading on their own or with a family member. Additionally, they were asked to bring in personal hygiene supplies and certain food items requested by Island Harvest or to make a donation to the American Red Cross. The students also wrote letters of support to the survivors of the hurricane, which were to be delivered by local firefighters.
Part of the district’s mission is to inspire students to contribute to the global community. Dinkelmeyer Principal Faith Skelos said children are always asked to consider, “What can you do to help people?” The read-athon allowed students to perform a charitable act for others while supporting their own education.
