About:
The Riverhead Girls Volleyball team continues to demonstrate that the power of sport goes far beyond the scoreboard — using their platform to raise awareness, inspire compassion, and strengthen their community.
Earlier this season, the team took the court for a Cancer Awareness Game, wearing special jerseys to honor and support those whose lives have been touched by cancer. Each serve, dig, and spike was played for the fighters, survivors, and loved ones remembered. Through the generosity of their supporters, Riverhead Volleyball raised funds to assist a local family currently facing the challenges of a cancer diagnosis, proving that kindness and teamwork can bring real comfort to those in need.
The Blue Waves also hosted their Spike Out Hunger game, where athletes, fans, and families came together to stock the shelves of the Roanoke Avenue Food Pantry. Their efforts helped provide meals and hope to local residents — a true display of service and unity.
In September, Riverhead Volleyball partnered with Ryan’s Team for a Mental Health Awareness Game, sharing an empowering message: “It’s okay not to be okay.”
Ryan’s Team is a local charity founded by Kate, in honor of her brother Ryan, who passed away at the age of 16 on January 28, 2021. The organization carries forward Ryan’s legacy by spreading life, love, and open conversations around mental health.
Having Ryan’s Team at the game was a powerful reminder that checking in on friends, asking for help, and showing compassion are signs of strength. As the Blue Waves continue to play with heart and purpose, they’re helping to create a culture where every voice matters and every story is valued.
