About:
Garden City, N.Y. – In celebration of the 10-year anniversary of the Bridges to Adelphi Program, the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), Department of Athletics and a number of other campus clubs and programs will be hosting a unity walk on Sunday, April 27.
The Bridges to Adelphi program is dedicated to providing the highest levels of individualized academic, social, and vocational support services to Adelphi’s neurodiverse students. This includes students who self-disclose that they are on the autism spectrum, or students who have other non-verbal or neurological-social disorders.
The event will take place on campus with the doors opening at 9:30 a.m. Festivities will begin with a walk around the campus at 10 a.m., ending near the Flagpole Lawn. Following the walk, there will be food trucks, raffles, lawn games and other fun activities with prizes for all. Registration cost is $5. Bridges to Adelphi t-shirts will be available to purchase for $35.
“This is truly a mutually beneficial opportunity. We appreciate athletics for thinking of us and wanting to include us at this event,” said Diana Damilatis-Kull, Director of the Bridges to Adelphi Program.
In an effort to collaborate with the neurodiverse community, this event will serve as the second of two department wide community service projects. This is the first time that SAAC will be offering this event. Greek Life and the Student Government Association will also take part in the activities throughout the day, showing their Panther Pride.
“The Bridges to Adelphi students have always supported our teams and student-athletes. It’s great to see our student-athletes shine the light back onto the Bridges program and students,” said Director of Athletics Danny McCabe.
“We look forward to a great day celebrating and raising funds for this wonderful program.”
In addition to all activities, the Bridges Program will have portable sensory rooms available for individuals who wish to take a break from the activities.
Community organizations that wish to participate, please contact Delaney Kiendra, volleyball student athlete and SAAC community service representative, for more information.
